Eurozone Consumer Prices Fall For Fourth Month

Eurozone inflation remained negative for the fourth consecutive month in March, flash estimate from Eurostat showed Tuesday.

The harmonized index of consumer prices fell 0.1 percent year-on-year in March, in line with expectations. But it was slower than February’s 0.3 percent decline and 0.6 percent fall seen in January.

The European Central Bank aims to bring inflation towards the target of below, but close to, 2 percent over the medium term.

Core inflation that excludes energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, slowed marginally to 0.6 percent from 0.7 percent in February. It was forecast to remain unchanged at 0.7 percent.

Costs of food, alcohol and tobacco increased 0.6 percent and services charges climbed 1 percent. Meanwhile, energy and non-energy industrial goods prices declined 5.8 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.
