Sitting May Be The Key Cause Of Back Pain, Avoid Sitting

Maintaining good posture when sitting can be helpful for avoiding pain in a number of areas, including the back, neck, and shoulders. But a better solution may be to avoid sitting as much as possible, period.

I suffered with with persistent back pain for 5 + years from a riding accident. My avocation had me sitting many hours daily, I even had a custom chair built, but it when I started taking hourly breaks,, moving around and standing and introduced a yoga routine that it improved and eventually went away. Took about 1.5 years, have been free of it now for about 14 years.

When I started, standing would be painful, and it was difficult for me to stand for an hour at a time. But by reducing my 12 to 14 hours of daily sitting to 8, plus the yoga, my back pain subsided and eventually stopped.

Now, typically I  sit for 50 mins and get up and move around for 10 mins, and I always take a walk in the Sun mid afternoons.

The research on standing up Vs sitting shows that beneficial molecular effects are activated simply by carrying your bodyweight upon your legs.

For example: within 90 secs of standing up from a sitting position, the muscular and cellular systems that process blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol, which are mediated by insulin are activated. These cellular mechanisms are also responsible for pushing fuel into our cells.

This is part of the evidence that the human body was built for more continuous movement, not consistent strenuous activity, but gentle non-exercise activity, and this includes simply standing.

In other words, our bodies cease to function properly when it is still for too long. The evidence suggests sitting for just 1 full hour is too long. Ideally, sitting should break up our movement, not the other way round.

If you have a desk job, perhaps a stand-up desk is the answer.

I am convinced of the benefits of standing up rather than sitting down. So, get up, move around, walk in the Sun…

Eat healthy, Be healthy, Live lively.
